BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

Manly pet owners, Vet-O Pet Services is just a stone's throw away

Manly has a particular relationship with animals. The promenade from Queenscliff to Shelly Beach is one of Sydney’s most popular dog-walking routes on any given morning. Manly Lagoon Park is an off-leash spot with no time restrictions. North Head Sanctuary offers on-leash trails through coastal scrub. The pub at the wharf welcomes dogs in its outdoor areas. For a suburb of 16,000 people, the pet infrastructure is unusually well developed.

Vet-O Pet Services is at 626 Pittwater Road in Brookvale, inside the PetO complex — about 10 minutes by car from Manly via Pittwater Road. Dr Chris Hong founded the clinic to give Northern Beaches pet owners consistent, expert care at prices that are visible before they book. He has been at the same clinic since it opened and sees patients every day the clinic is open.

Vet-O Pet Services brings these benefits for Many Pet Owners

Expertise without the specialist price tag

Manly’s median household income is among the highest on the Northern Beaches. Residents who live here are used to paying for quality — but they also notice when they’re being over-serviced. Dr Chris Hong completed his B.Sc, B.Comm and B.V.Sc at the University of Sydney and worked at North Shore Veterinary Specialist Centre before founding Vet-O Pet Services. He has developed particular interests in surgery, internal medicine and animal behaviour. The clinic has in-house digital X-ray, ultrasound and a fully equipped sterile operating theatre — most conditions can be diagnosed and treated on the day, without a referral.

No invoice surprises — prices shown before you book

Vaccination prices are published on the website. You know the cost of a C3, C5 or C7 before you leave Manly. If a procedure requires additional work mid-treatment, you are called before anything goes ahead. Manly pet owners who have encountered the ‘we’ll-work-out-costs-after’ approach elsewhere tend to notice this difference quickly.

Tick prevention for dogs who use the harbour trails

North Head Sanctuary trails run through coastal scrub where paralysis ticks are active. The promenade to Shelly Beach is paved and relatively low-risk, but dogs who venture beyond the footpath — onto the grass at Shelly Beach headland or through scrub sections of the Manly to Spit Bridge walk — need current tick prevention. Vet-O Pet Services provides tick prevention advice, checks for embedded ticks during wellness exams, and treats tick paralysis as an emergency when it occurs.

Open when you get back from the evening ferry

Manly residents who commute to the CBD by ferry arrive home in the early evening. If your cat has been off food all day and you notice it at 7:30pm on a Wednesday, the clinic is still open. The evening window — 7pm to 10pm, Monday to Friday — was designed for exactly that situation.

Vet-O Pet Services's experience with Manly

Manly’s dog-walking geography has a specific layout worth knowing. The 2.5km promenade from Queenscliff to Shelly Beach is paved, flat, and busy — ideal for a daily walk, but it means a lot of social interaction with other dogs and humans. Dogs who do this walk regularly need their vaccination and parasite prevention kept current: parvovirus, kennel cough and canine influenza circulate wherever dogs meet in numbers.

Manly Lagoon Park in Queenscliff is an off-leash area with no time restrictions, including water access. It’s popular and busy on weekends. Dogs who swim in the lagoon regularly should have their ears checked periodically — water in the ear canal from lagoon swimming is a common trigger for ear infections, especially in breeds with floppy ears.

For cat owners: Manly has a significant nesting population of Little Penguins along the harbour foreshore. If your cat has outdoor access and you live near the harbour side of the peninsula — particularly around Collins Beach Road, Manly Cove or Stuart Street — this is worth discussing with a vet. There are council-designated wildlife protection areas where cats and dogs are prohibited. A microchipped, desexed, and vaccinated cat with managed outdoor access is the baseline recommendation in this area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Vet-O Pet Services from Manly?

The clinic is at 626 Pittwater Road inside the PetO complex in Brookvale — about 10 minutes by car from Manly via Pittwater Road, or accessible by bus along the same route.

Are you open on weekends and evenings?

Yes. Saturday 8:30am to 12:30pm, Sunday 8:30am to 12pm. Weekday evenings 7pm to 10pm, Monday through Friday.

My dog walks the promenade to Shelly Beach every day. What health issues should I watch for?

Saltwater exposure can dry and crack paw pads over time. Dogs on promenade walks also encounter other dogs and marine environments. Regular paw checks, annual wellness exams, and keeping vaccinations and tick prevention current are the main things to stay on top of.

Are there areas in Manly where I must keep my dog leashed or excluded altogether?

Yes. Dogs are prohibited in all areas of Manly where Little Penguins nest — this is a Wildlife Protection Area. Dogs must also be kept leashed on the promenade walks. Off-leash areas include Manly Lagoon Park in Queenscliff and North Harbour Reserve in Balgowlah. Always check Northern Beaches Council signage before letting your dog off leash.

My cat is purely indoor. How often should she have a vet check?

At minimum annually. Indoor cats develop dental disease, weight-related issues and urinary conditions that progress slowly and may not be obvious until they become significant. A yearly wellness check is the standard recommendation.

Where do I go for an after-hours emergency?

The emergency phone line is reachable from 6am to 10pm any day on 02 8964 7906. Outside those hours the recorded message will direct you to the nearest after-hours emergency hospital.
